{"id":938,"date":"2014-10-12T14:44:54","date_gmt":"2014-10-12T18:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/?p=938"},"modified":"2014-10-23T18:50:54","modified_gmt":"2014-10-23T22:50:54","slug":"elevator-skin-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/?p=938","title":{"rendered":"Elevator (Skin Repair)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I consulted with Terry Gardner on the best approach for handling the skin crease in the lower right elevator skin.\u00a0 Just proceeding &#8216;as-is&#8217; was one option, provided continual awareness of any crack development over time.\u00a0 After considering alternatives, we decided to apply an external patch, drill out the adjacent rivets, stress relief holes, provide some bonding with a thin layer of ProSeal, and then apply new structural rivets all around.\u00a0 Essentially this approach sandwiches the weakened crease line between the new patch and the internal rib. This may seem like a touch of overkill, but worrying about potential cracks on a new plane did not seem an attractive alternative.\u00a0 Plus the time is right &#8211; the right elevator is basically wide open, I can get to both sides of the skins, and using structural rivets is preferred to Cherry rivets applied later.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the effort for the week of October 5-11.<\/p>\n<p><a (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Pattern laid out to fabricate the patch.\u00a0 Here I am using a scrap piece of .025&#8243; aluminum.\u00a0 The skin itself is .016&#8243;, so this should be adequate and easily use an AN426AD3-4 rivet for proper thickness.\u00a0 The Advisory Circular AD43.13 page 4-20 was used to determine proper rivet separate for this plate (three diameters between centers).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4575.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-rmDDg3Sa\" defined, not diffuse across the skin.\u00a0 Next up is dimpling, bonding and riveting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4584.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-rmDDg3Sa\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" is depicted (next to the roughed out patch plate).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Week of October 20 &#8211; A business trip to LA consumed over a week of my time. Before leaving I ordered a small one ounce quantity of ProSeal equivalent from Van&#8217;s for bonding the patch to the skin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4611.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-rmDDg3Sa\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-948\" src=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4611-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMGP4611\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4611-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4611-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>This stuff looks and smells just like the branded ProSeal version.\u00a0 This container has a one hour set time, so moving expeditiously through the process is required. The white bottle contains the main compound, the foil pouch has a black colored catalyst.\u00a0 The instructions call for uniform mixing with the wooden stick, and the final outcome should be a dark grey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4612.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-rmDDg3Sa\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-949\" src=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4612-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMGP4612\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4612-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rv10.mirimar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMGP4612-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The mixture did turn dark grey.\u00a0 The stuff is very sticky and quite thick, which made it difficult to spread thinly or evenly on the pieces.
